Total Credit Union Investments

Investment balances decline amid strong lending activity.

As of December 31, 2017, credit unions held $363.4 billion in investments, down 2.5% from the 3^rd quarter. Investment balances have followed the seasonal trend of gradually declining over the course of the year as lending picks up and deposit growth wains after the first quarter. Total credit union assets expanded 0.9% from the third quarter to nearly $1.4 trillion, while loan balances increased at a faster rate of 1.9%.

Balances rise due to seasonal share inflows

As of March 31, 2017, credit unions held $402.3 billion in investments, an 8.4% increase from the 4th quarter. As shown below, total investments increased as liquidity rose with share balances following their usual pattern of posting the strongest growth in the first quarter. Total credit union assets grew steadily to an all-time high of nearly $1.4 trillion. Investment balances are up, 3.4% versus the first quarter of 2016 while total assets expanded 7.9% over the period.

With lending activity remaining strong, investment balances decline

As of December 31, 2016, credit unions held $371 billion in investments, down 2.5% from the 3^rd quarter. As the chart below shows, total investments have followed the typical trend of gradually declining over the course of the year as lending picks up and deposit growth slows after the first quarter. Total credit union assets expanded 1.3% over the same period to $1.3 trillion, while loan balances increased at a faster rate of 2.7%, resulting in investment dollars continuing to be diverted to relatively higher yielding loan products.

Industry Investment Trends for Q4 2015

As of December 31, 2015, credit unions held $350 billion in investments, a slight increase from the 3rd quarter. As the chart below shows, total investments were relatively unchanged reflecting the recent pattern in the 3rd and 4th quarters. Total credit union assets remained steady at an all-time high of $1.2 trillion. Very few new investments were made as most institutions awaited the Fedai??i??s decision to finally raise short-term rates at its December meeting.

As the chart below shows, total investments decreased $17 billion from the previous quarterai??i??s total of $367 billion, continuing the trend of credit unions funding more loans. Ai??Total credit union assets remained steady at an all-time high of $1.18 trillion. The industryai??i??s loan to share ratio increased, rising from 75% in the 2^nd quarter of 2015 to 77% in the 3rd quarter of 2015 accounting for the decline in investments.
